About the archive

DERWeb (the Dental Educational Resources on the Web project) was founded in Sheffield in the 1990s to share high-quality clinical dental photography for teaching. Its image library was distributed to dental schools on a series of six CD-ROMs, each slide scanned from the original 35mm transparency at 2400×1600 pixels and accompanied by a catalogue of scholarly descriptions.

DERWeb Ltd has since been dissolved. In keeping with the project's founding mission — promoting the educational value of these images — the collection has been re-published here as a permanent open archive by Referral Management Services Ltd.

The collection

The archive spans seven subject areas — Prosthetics, Oral Surgery, Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Endodontics & Implantology, and a miscellany — drawn from the original six-disc DERWeb CD-ROM set and the 2014 Dental Image Collective release. Where the full-resolution scan did not survive on the source discs, the catalogue entry is retained — clearly marked — together with any surviving preview.

Embedded metadata

Every downloadable full-resolution image carries its catalogue record embedded in the file (XMP and IPTC fields: title, description, subject keywords, source, and rights). The description and licence notice travel with the image wherever it goes.

Terms of use

You may use images from this archive without asking for permission, provided you follow the licence below and cite the source.

Permitted uses

• Teaching and lectures (including slides and handouts)
• Non-commercial research, dissertations, and scholarly publications
• Non-commercial continuing professional development
• Adaptation (cropping, annotation, inclusion in composite teaching materials)

Not permitted without separate agreement

• Commercial use of any kind (including paid courses, textbooks, apps, or products for sale)
• Redistribution of unmodified downloads as a stock image library or similar
• Removing or altering embedded metadata, or presenting images as your own work

Clinical photographs may depict identifiable patients from historic teaching collections. Use responsibly and in line with your institution's ethics policies.
